Summary:

Under general supervision, installs, tests, repairs, calibrates and maintains medical equipment in healthcare and other facilities supported by Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium.

Responsibilities:

All:

- Installs, tests, repairs, calibrates and maintains medical equipment supported by ANTHC.

- Investigates equipment failures. Performs troubleshooting to isolate and diagnose problems; identifies, locates, resolves and repairs equipment and devices.

- Investigates intermittent problems.

- Maintains accurate service records, and documents actions taken.

- Updates database of equipment identification, location, status, reliability and service documentation.

- Schedules and performs preventive maintenance procedures.

- Inspects equipment for physical integrity and technical performance.

- Verifies power levels and functions are within licensed parameters.

- Research regulations, procedures, and technical reference materials.

- Modifies, upgrades and tests medical equipment; develops procedures as needed.

- Maintains accurate records, and documents repair actions taken.

- Implements and monitors hazard alerts and recalls.

- Compiles, analyzes, and updates statistical information, reports and related documents.

- Develops and presents training classes; consults with users to define needs and suggests training solutions.

- Monitors parts inventory and usage trends and recommends procurement strategies and failure analysis.

- Complies with all ANTHC safety policies and procedures, Federal Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations.

- Reviews recurring technical issues and recommends solutions; provides insight and technical strategy for planning of equipment upgrades.

- Performs other duties as assigned.

Biomedical Equipment Technician II

- Mentors Biomedical Equipment Technician I colleagues.

- Performs the position responsibilities at a higher level with minimal supervision.

Biomedical Equipment Technician III

- Performs the position responsibilities at the highest level with minimal or no supervision.

- Analyze regulatory information and materials to assess their impact on the hospital environment; collaborate with affected departments to implement necessary changes.

- Adjust, calibrate, align, and modify medical equipment circuitry and components; record performance impacts, interpret test data, and troubleshoot equipment failures.

- Assist managers and directors with estimates, specifications, designs, and project support related to medical device projects; provide insight for equipment upgrades and planning.

- Verify the functionality of newly installed equipment, ensuring system performance meets specifications; conduct preventive maintenance procedures and inspections for technical integrity and compliance with licensed parameters.

- Mentor BMET I and BMET II colleagues and assists department supervisor with organizing projects, including locating and remediating recalled devices.

- Maintain, repair, and troubleshoot complex medical systems, including performing system integrations and addressing intermittent issues.

- Implement and monitor hazard alerts, recalls, and safety compliance; stay informed on regulatory issues and ensure adherence to FDA, NFPA, OSHA, and ANTHC safety policies.

- Knowledge of medical electronics equipment hardware and software systems and communications devices.

- Knowledge of electronic equipment functions, repair procedures, codes and standards.

- Knowledge of computer networks and telecommunications equipment infrastructure.

- Skill in assessing, analyzing, identifying and implementing solutions to technical problems.

- Skill in reading technical diagrams and manuals.

- Skill in using the techniques, tools and test equipment for troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of electronic equipment.

- Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.

- Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.

- Coordination of scheduling repairs with hospital department staff as well as the removal and replacement of medical equipment requiring external maintenance.

- Liaise with equipment manufacturers and vendors for technical support and procurement of parts and services.

- Ability to work independently.

Biomedical Equipment Technician II/III

- Ability to demonstrate comprehensive understanding and communicate the use of devices supported, including clinical equipment, radiological, and network medical systems.

- Ability to troubleshoot and repair medical equipment independently.

Biomedical Equipment Technician III

- Knowledge of project management terms and methods.

- Knowledge of local and national public safety and regulatory issues.

- Ability to analyze and interpret test data.

- Ability to collaborate effectively across all levels of the organization.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION:

All:

- An associate's degree in applied sciences, electronics, or similar discipline preferred. Progressively responsible professional/exempt work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education.

- Experience in Lieu of Education: One (1) year troubleshooting, repair, preventative Maintenance and calibration of electronic equipment in the Biomedical field or Two (2) years electronic repair experience.

Biomedical Equipment Technician II:

- Experience in lieu of Education: Three (3) years troubleshooting, repair, preventative maintenance and calibration of electronic equipment in the Biomedical or related electronics field.

Biomedical Equipment Technician III:

Experience in Lieu of Education: Fine (5) years troubleshooting, repair, preventative maintenance and calibration of electronic equipment in the Biomedical or related electronics field.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION:

Biomedical Equipment Technician I:

- Non-supervisory - One (1) year of work experience. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.

Biomedical Equipment Technician II:

- Non-supervisory - Three (3) years of medical instrumentation repair and/or maintenance experience including at least two with specialized imaging equipment such as ultrasound, MR CT, or x-ray. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.

Biomedical Equipment Technician III:

- Non-supervisory - Five (5) years of medical instrumentation repair and/or maintenance experience including at least two with specialized imaging equipment such as ultrasound, MR CT, or x-ray. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.

MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION:

All:

- Certified Associate in Biomedical Technology (CABT). All other certifications as required for specific work area.

PREFERRED EDUCATION QUALIFICATION:

- Biomedical Equipment Technician III Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Electronics.
