Job Description

HiClimb opened in Honolulu, Hawaii on July 1, 2021. Our 14,000 square foot facility offers over 8,000 square feet of climbing terrain that includes bouldering, a kilter board, top-rope, auto belays and lead climbing. We also offer our members and guests a weightlifting area, yoga and fitness classes, a café and co-working spaces.

 The Route Setting Manager (RSM) is responsible for the quality, excellence, and risk management systems of the HiClimb climbing terrain and associated equipment. They are responsible for ensuring continuity and cohesion of all facility setting team processes and systems to the HiClimb Standard for Route Setting. The RSM is focused on the effective management and professional development of the members, guests and whole team. The RSM is responsible for the quality of the climbing experience for our community members through consistent community engagement and proactively seeking community feedback.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Route Setting Team Management 

  • Ensure professional conduct for any employee on and off HiClimb premises, acting as a positive role model for the whole team, members, and guests at all times
  • Mentor and continually develop members of your team, taking into account their unique qualities and creating ways to employ and integrate those skills into professional development opportunities.
  • Help all team members by identifying weaknesses and offering constructive criticism
  • Help empower team members by identifying strengths and encouragement of professional development
  • Facilitate team member growth in and out of the facility

Daily:

  • Manage and optimize schedules for full time/part time setters, to meet a balance of quality, efficiency, density and job satisfaction.

5-6 week rotation at 100 boulder problems and 58 rope routes

Which means an average of

2-2.5 boulder problems per day of setting or

1-1.5 rope routes per day of setting

  • Actively route set with team and participate in forerunning, with a focus on mentoring team members
  • Maintain 1-business day response time with email and in-person follow-up as necessary
  • Track inventory of holds, setting tools, and PPE. On Monday.com
  • Keep a pulse on team morale and physical demands. Adjust floor time as needed to maintain excellent rapport with Route Setting Team.
  • Ensure all newly set routes and problems are accurately entered into Pebble Climbing App (or other gym apps), with grades, tags, and notes verified for accuracy.

Weekly:

  • Participate in a weekly 1:1 discussion with GM
  • Managers Meeting
  • Verify execution and documentation of weekly Risk Management Inspections tracked on Monday.com
  • Weekly setter’s meeting tracked on Monday.com
  • Work with the Community Manager to post up-to-date and engaging photos or videos for HiClimb Social media
  • Audit Pebble/Gym Climbing App entries to confirm accuracy, consistency, and alignment with HiClimb standards.

Bimonthly:

  • Verify accurate tracking of hours worked and task assignments and turn in payroll on the 1st and 16th of every month for the proceeding pay period.

Monthly:

  • Develop and monitor the budget of the setting department in coordination with the General Manager and owners
  • Co-Create monthly and quarterly budget progress reports with GM
  • Work proactively with your General Manager to support monthly budget and KPIs by reporting, identifying opportunities and testing hypothesis.

Quarterly:

  • Lead physical inventory reconciliation of equipment on Monday.com
  • Lead quarterly cross-department training with the Experience Team to enhance their ability to support members on climbing technique, risk management, and engagement with new sets.

As Needed/when possible:

  • Communicate budgetary restrictions, reasoning and timing
  • Coordinate purchase of holds, setting gear, tools, and personal protective equipment
  • Consolidate and manage vendor accounts
  • Coordinate external development opportunities
  • Be fully accountable for the route setting elements of events, ensuring all planning and execution are completed to HiClimb standards in coordination with the Management Team.
  • Co-create with the General Manager to update and maintain Standard Operating Procedures as needed
  • Ensure that operations are following standards as outlined
  • Onboard new team members
  • Ensure Route Setting team thoroughly understands HiClimb risk management philosophies, practices, and SOP’s
  • Ensure HiClimb is aligned with the greater risk management standards of the broader industry
  • Leverage personal industry networks to support recruiting
  • Keep abreast of industry developments and the latest events and offerings
  • Be a “market expert” -- be familiar with other brands:

Their route setting styles [density, approach, hold selection, volumes, features, etc.]

Their route setting teams and how they engage with community members [ex: events, competitions, workshops]

Their risk management practices

Their Route Setting Team amenities [RS wellness programs, insurance coverage, partnerships for RS teams]

You Have:

  • 3+ years of commercial route setting management experience
  • Experience setting for 2+ climbing gyms
  • Ability to forerun at least V6 and 5.12+
  • Extensive National and Local competition setting experience
  • Have headed up local competitions 5+ times, with additional experience in regional and/or divisional events preferred
  • Extensive outdoor climbing experience
  • Must be an active climber
  • Experience creating and implementing standard operating procedures
  • Experience in learning and coaching methodologies preferred
  • Proven ability to level-up route setting team members

Compensation:

  • Starting compensation annual salary: $57,000 during probationary period and $60,000 after 90 day review
