Sergeant - Police Department Hiring Department The University of Texas Permian Basin's Police Department welcomes applications for the position of Sergeant
Salary Range $68,676.00 depending on qualifications
Essential Functions The position is responsible for supervising police personnel engaged in law enforcement duties associated with the protection, safety, and welfare of students, employees, visitors, and property within the area under the control and jurisdiction of The University of Texas System. This position exercises independent judgment within limits prescribed by law, rules and regulations of the Board of Regents, institutional rules and regulations and Director of Police departmental policies and procedures. The sergeant also serves as a campus security authority as defined by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act).
Typical:
1. Supervises and participates in the policing of the property of The University of Texas System.
2. Preserves the peace by the use of all lawful means, interceding without warrant when authorized by law
to prevent or suppress crime.
3. Executes all lawful processes
4. Gives notice to the magistrate of offenses committed within the areas under the control and jurisdiction
of The University of Texas System.
5. Arrests offenders with and without a warrant were authorized by law.
6. Investigates all criminal offenses, to detect and arrest criminals and to recover lost or stolen property.
Attempts to locate missing persons.
7. Detects violations of the Transportation Code, makes violator contacts, and places violators in custody or
issues citations or warnings.
8. Investigates motor vehicle collisions.
9. Enforces Rules and Regulations of the Board of Regents.
10. Provides service, information, and direction to students, employees, and visitors.
11. Writes reports, analyze workloads, and plans work schedules.
12. Ensures conformance to policies and procedures by checking the quality of subordinates' performance.
13. Keeps staff informed of changes in departmental policies and regulations and legal interpretation.
Periodic:
1. Monitors police officers and guards on assignments, reviewing, evaluating, and correcting
performance.
2. Conducts formal and informal training for the continual development of police officers.
3. Confers with law enforcement agencies on matters of mutual concern.
4. Screens employment applications to determine eligibility.
5. Performs office and administration tasks.
6. Conducts surveillance
7. Conducts internal and background investigations.
8. Executes court orders and serves warrants.
9. Testifies in court and before grand juries.
Required Qualifications 1. Completion of Associate's degree or 60 credit hours.
2.Possess an Intermediate Certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education.
3. Must have a thorough knowledge of and ability to apply basic supervisory methods.
4. Must have the physical and mental capabilities to properly carry out responsibilities and duties as a commissioned police officer for the University of Texas Permian Basin.
5. Possess a valid Texas driver's license not subject to suspension and must be eligible to drive a motor vehicle owned or leased by the University of Texas System.
Preferred Qualifications 1. At least 60 credit hours with above minimum qualifications.
2. Four years experience as a commissioned police officer, at least two of which were served within the University of Texas System.

Schedule Generally, the normal work hours for the university are Monday through Thursday, 7:30 - 5:30 pm; Friday, 8:00 am - 12:00 pm with a one-hour lunch. The individual holding this position may need to be available early morning, evening, and on weekends to meet the needs of the department. Hours worked may differ with some departments.
Standard Working Conditions 1. Able to lift various materials up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis.
2. Able to bend, crouch, and reach continuously.
3. Physically able remain seated, frequently to continuously.
4. Able to remain standing up to 15% of the time.
5. Possesses dexterity abilities required to perform job duties including extensive keyboard work, operating office equipment, performing filing, and other job-related responsibilities that include extensive wrist and hand movement.

8. Must be able to work rotating day or night shifts
9. Shifts are 12 hour with varying days off and holidays are worked
10. Work involves a degree of danger
11. This position requires the abilities to supervise and participate in the policing of the property of the University of Texas systems.
12. Enforces rules and regulations of the Board of Regents.
